Section Five

If you are working on Section Five, you can consider this quarter a success with regard to making sufficient progress with your writing. This assignment calls for a response to your independent reading. As the directions note, this should not be a restatement of the book's plot or ideas, but instead an exploration of the ideas in the text. You should use the book, the ideas contained in the book, as a starting point, or a springboard for your essay. In many ways, this is similar to the response to the essay you summarized, but developed in greater depth and detail.

So is this like a response essay like we did for the articles, except for our book?
book response
That's a good way to think of the fifth essay, as a response to the book. But don't respond to the whole book. Pull out something you think interesting, worthwhile in some way, some big idea that it takes on, and write about that. Use the book as a starting point to develop your thoughts on whatever the issue is. Run some ideas by Josh and myself in class and we'll see what direction you might end up taking. Bradley
