This assignment requires that you write a response to one of the three readings that have been (will be) conducted during the second week of class. Each of the three assigned readings will be discussed in class as part of a pre-writing/brainstorming for the writing task.

• "American Sport at Century's End" (5-10) will be discussed Tuesday.
• "Sport as Secular Sacrament" (11-20) will be discussed Wednesday.
• "Sport in Society: An Inspiration or an Opiate?" (21-37) will be discussed Thursday.

Once the readings have been completed and the ideas in each examined, the writing task is to take one idea from anywhere in the three readings and to write a response to that idea. In short, what do you think about it?

The first part of your paragraph will require you to set up and introduce the idea to which you will be responding. The rest of the paragraph will be devoted to expressing your thoughts in a general sense and backing those generalizations up with specific examples drawn from wherever you can find them, as long as that's not the book. We want you to bring your life and experience into the ideas found in the book. The examples you provide need not be sports related. Anything will do as long as you can make a solid connection between the ideas and the examples.
