Chapter 18
-Jurgis is released from prison, three days late
-Family has been evicted while he was in prison and home is occupied by new family who bought the house "new"
-Jurgis finds his family at the boarding house the originally stayed when the first arrived in America
-Ona is in life threatening labor, and baby is early
-Jurgis runs to find a doctor with his $1.25 he managed to scrouge up

Chapter 19
-Jurgis finds mid wife, Madame Haupt, promises to pay her
-Jurgis goes and drinks as he is not allowed to stay
-Jurgis returns to find baby died, ona follow suit, Madame Haupt demands pay despite result
-jurgis spends all kotrina's money on drink

Chapter 20
-Ona is to be buried in potter's feild
-Jurgis finds he is blacklisted
-Elzbieta is worried Jurgis will desert the family
-Jurgis runs into old union member and gets job at Harvester Trust trucking cast pieces across the assembly line
-Factory closes until further notice

Chapter 21
-Well-to-do lady sees families struggle and gives Jurgis a letter for a job
-Letter gets him a job moving railroad track of the processing line inside the steel mill
-Jurgis stays in polish boarding house during week, and comes home saturday
-Antanas drowns in street after falling five feet

Chapter 22
-Jurgis deserts family by leaving on a train as far as it took him
-Jurgis starts life as a tramp
-He travels with a gang for a bit, finds some work, and moves on
-Jurgis misses his wife and son, being reminded along his journey

Chapter 23
-Jurgis Gets job as a tunnel digger by lying
-Jurgis gets injured and spends christmas in hospital eating "graft-meat"
-He is back on the streets, begging to survive

Chapter 24
-Begging, Jurgis meets a drunken Freddie Jones who offers him a meal
-Jurgis calls cab and is given $100 to pay the cab and keep the rest
-Kicked out of freddie's place by butler

Chapter 25
-Jurgis goes to bar to change hundred dollar bill
-Bartender short changes him, and Jurgis tries to chase him down
-Jurgis is arrested and gets ten days plus cost
-he runs into an old jail friend, Jack Duane
-Jurgis gets immigrants to vote for Mike Scully and gets huge sums of cash for it
