Chapter 18
• Jurgis had no money for court fees so he had to spend 3 extra nights in jail
• The family lost the house while he was away and returned to live with Juknienes
• Ona gives birth early but the family had no money for a midwife
• Jurgis scrounges up some money to try to get Ona some help from a midwife

Chapter 19
• After explaining to midwife Madam Haupt that Jurgis has no money but can get some she agrees finally to help him out.
• Jurgis is told to leave the house so he goes to the saloon for a drink and falls asleep at the saloon
• Madam Haupt is covered in blood and tells Jurgis that there is nothing more she can do the baby is dead and Ona is dying.
• Ona dies and Jurgis takes Kotrina’s three dollars and heads back to the saloon to get drunk

Chapter 20
• Jurgis drinks away all the money and the kids are hungry
• Ona is buried
• Elzbieta reminds Jurgis that he has responsibilities still like his son and needs to get his act together
• Jurgis can’t get his old job back and is black listed through town for beating up Phil Conner
• Jurgis goes downtown to try to find a job and gets a job from an old friend he knew from the union
• Jurgis’s job is easy and he makes a dollar and seventy five cents a day
• Jurgis starts to gain hope again until he arrives at his place of work and finds that his factory is closed until further notice

Chapter 21
• Jurigs is back on the streets looking for a job
• The family survives off the money that the children make
• Elzbietas crippled son Juozapas goes to the dump to find food and is spotted by a local woman who doesn’t think that is the best spot to get food
• The woman visits with Elzbieta and learns how horrible things have been for the family
• The lady helps Jurgis get a job at the steel mils
• The job is so far away that Jurgis only comes home once a week
• Jurgis gets hurt at work so he gets to spend some more time with his son
• His son is growing up and starts talking
• Marija and Elzbieta both have jobs now
• Antanas dies, he drowned in the street

Chapter 22
• Jurgis is upset of losing his son and leaves the family on a freight train
• Jurgis is traveling through the country staying were he can and eating where he can
• Jurgis is offered work from the farmer but turns it down since there is no guarantee through the winter
• Jurgis feels young again but still from time to time thinks of Ona and his baby
• Jurgis would meet others like him and learn from them
• Jurgis made good money during the harvest time but spent it all on partying
• Jurgis has an emotional breakdown when he watches a farmer’s wife bath her baby

Chapter 23
• Jurgis goes back to the city to find a job and gets on lying and using some of the tricks he learned on the road
• Jurgis’s new job is digging tunnels underground for telephone wires
• Jurgis continues to spend his money on alcohol
• After a few weeks of work Jurgis hurts himself and has to spend Christmas in the hospital
• He has no way to earn money for food and has no place to go
• Jurgis runs out of money and has to start to beg for money and food but isn’t very good and there is much competition

Chapter 24
• One night begging for food Jurgis meets a drunk man name Freddy Jones who wants to help
• Freddy invites Jurgis to the house and gives Jurgis one hundred dollars to pay for the cab, but Jurgis pockets the money
• They arrive at the house and it is enormous
• Freddy takes Jurgis through the house and feeds Jurgis with as much as he can eat and drink
• After Freddy passes out the butler throws Jurgis out

Chapter 25
• Jurgis goes to the saloon to get change for the hundred dollars but the bartender says he nutty and short changes him ninety nine dollars
• Jurgis attacks the bartender and ends up back in Jail again
• The court does not believe his story again and sends him to jail for 10 days plus court fees
• Jurgis meets Jack Duane in jail again and agrees to meet up when they get out
• Jurgis and Duane rob a man and make some good money off of it
• Through the life of crime Jurgis begins to see how corrupt the city really is
• Jurgis cut back on drinking as much and started robbing more
• Mike Scully needs to secure the votes from Packingtown for the republican candidate
• He sends Jurgis to get a job and convince the union to vote for Doyle
• Doyle gets elected after a corrupt election of voters voting multiple times
