Essay due Tuesday

For the people that werent here today, the first draft is due tuesday. Thought Id let you all know so you dont get a suprise on tuesday..

Journal 27- Dickinson

I Reason- #301

What is it? The repitition I found was her continually asking, "But, what of that?". At the end of each stanza (4 lines) she would ask this question.

What does it do? As you read throught the first 3 lines of each stanza you she gives you a little information about life in general and then asks, whats the point? If she had just listed them all off then at the end say "But, what of that?" it would have been the same, repetition in this case keeps the reader focused on her main point, whats the point?

Journal 25- Whitman

"And I know that the hand of God is the promice of my own, and I know that the spirit of God is the brother of my own, and that all the men ever born are also my brothers, and the women my sisters and lovers..."

What is it? He is talking about the connection he has to his "brothers" and "sisters" (not actually) and how although they are not related, they are connected.

What does it do? It shows the connection people can have when they are in this case I believe sharing similar ideals.

Journal 24- Billy Bud

1. It was not justified for Claggart to lie about Billy, but Billy shoudnt have killed him.

"With the measured step and calm collected air of an asylum physician approaching in the public hall some patient beginning to show indications of a comeing paroxysm, Claggart deliberatle advanced within short range of Billy and, mesmerically looking him in the eye, briefly recapitulated the accusation." (accusation later found to be of mutiny)

Journal 22- Poe

The Philosophy of Compostition

"-that is to say who could- detail step by step, the processes by which anyone of his compositions attained ist ultimate point of completion", "Most writers- poets in especial- prefer having it understood that they compose by a species of fine frenziy.."

What is it? This essay really goes in to how Poe would approach a peice of his poetry or writing. He went through some general steps as to how his essay would sound, read, and affect the reader.

Journal 21- Thoreau

"But a government in which the majority rule in all cases cannot be based on justice, even as far as men understand it..."

What is it? Passage stating the issue/problem that can come with "majority rule".

What does it do? It states that complete "majority rule" cannot be based on justice. Does the fact that the majority voted for something make it the right thing to do?

Journal 20- Emerson and Nature

"...that the primary forms, as the sky, the mountain, the tree, the animal, give us a delight in and for themselves; a pleasure arising from outline, color, motion, and grouping."

What is it? A passage describing some generic things that are seen as beautiful or delightful.

Need some help on a passage...

But, before Mr. D--------- had done speaking, a light gleamed far and wide over all the muffled sky. It was doubtless caused by one of those meteors, which the night-watcher may so often observed burning out to waste; in the vacant regions of the atmosphere. So powerful was its radiance, that it thoroughly illuminated the dense medium of cloud betwixt the sky and earth. The great vault brightened, like the dome of mid-day, but also with the awfulness that is always imparted to familiar objects by an unaccustomed light.

Journal 19- Webster

1) Benjamin Franklin- Poor Richard Improved "He determined to make a success of himself by adhering to a meticulous schedule of work and self-improvement and by methodically attending to every detail of daily existence with a rigor that would have pleased his Puritan forebears."

What it is? The glory that I believe Franklin gave to America was the glory of hard working people out to better themselves. What is now called the American dream.
