Scene 3 Act 1 Lines 129-155

When I read this passage the image that came to my mind was Olivia absolutely pouring her heart out to Cesario not caring whether she was embarrassing herself or not. Viola on the other hand I see as being very embarrassed but trying to hide it from Olivia. She feels awkward. I see Olivia touching Cesario almost begging for his love and Viola almost shuddering at her touch. Because the audience is on the inside of Viola's disguise I see this scene as a very comedic scene, provoking laughter throughout the audience.

Great job!

I think you nailed it on the head about this scene. And watching the movie was pretty cool too! This (to me) is one of the funniest parts of the play and the audience, i believe, is cringing at the mistaken love of Olivia for another women (who can blame her though, our sex is completely irresistible;) Awesome job!

Having read and now seen the scene in class, i do agree that there is a lot of awkwardness between the two women. As i said in class, i envisioned the scene being indoors, so that furniture was in the way. I also envision Cesario getting up to leave and Olivia kinda pushing him back into a chair (possibly a bit provocatively) when she says "stay, i prithee..." I just see Olivia getting desperate and trying to get Cesario to stay.

good reading

I have a passage from the play, this one, that we'll look at and you'll see how much your vision is in line with the vision of the director of what we'll see. Can you see it being played otherwise, and what that might do to the players and the audience?

In a way it makes me feel bad because that would be so embarassing. I can also see this scene making the audience laugh. Great job pulling the scene apart to understand it.

feeling bad and comedy

I was feeling bad when watching the comedy Bridesmaids. Kristen (or Kirsten, I can't remember) Wigg gets into a tiff with her best friend's possibly new BFF and they are outdoing each other so painfully in showing how each is "the" best friend. I almost had to stop watching it hurt so. Olivia isn't quite as painful to watch, but she could be if played in an over-the-top way.
