act 1 scene 3

from the third scene of the first act, we got a little taste of the character Sir Toby Belch. Gathering from the things that he himself said, and the way he reacted to things Maria said, i got a taste of his character, without knowing anything about him. From this scene, my first impression of Sir Toby belch, was that he is a strong believer of male dominance. He’s not what he call a “sensitive” guy, what with him complaining about Olivia grieving for so long, and sending strange drinking buddies to her room too woo her. He’s kind of a man’s man. Drinks too much and is proud of it, and doesn’t like to take shit from others. So what if Maria and olive disapprove of his drinking? He doesn’t care-he knows what’s best. He says things like “He’s a coward and a coistrel that will not drink to my niece till his brains turn o' th' toe like a parish top. What, wench!” basically saying he’ll beat up anyone who doesn’t drink to her- like a man, violence is his first option. He’s a blunt aggressive character, who doesn’t necessarily consider tactics and subtlety. He just straight up told sir Andrew to woo Maria. Very blunt and not exactly polite.

I gathered all this about him from reading between the lines. The words coming out his mouth did not speak for themselves. He or Maria didn’t stand there telling the reader (me) that this man is an arrogant, aggressive blunt and insensitive man. This is something I concluded myself. I imagine a man who looks like a drunk, and doesn’t really care for the opinions of others.

all these could just be customary

we've learned that by nature it was accepted that women were of a lower status than men. in many aspects of life this is still true in my culture. Many mexican men seem to have this self proclaimed machismo..."You woman, Me man. I say, You do.". unfortunately this was also accompanied by a drunk state of mind. Although i have raised my children to be independent. It seems to me that for the older generation, some customs are hard to stray from in some cultures. I, being from the baby boomer generation, still struggle, from time to time, with speaking up for myself and voicing my opinion because of similar cultural customs

yeah he definitely thought he

yeah he definitely thought he was a cool dude. you can tell that he saw himself as superior, but i thought it was interesting that Maria wasnt about to deal with him, becuase she, like the reader, saw what his true character was like. in this scene you also got the sense that Maria, although inferior to him, wasnt in the same state of mind as others may have been.

Good job! I think you did a

Good job! I think you did a great job reading between the lines. I can see your interpretation being accurate. I also think that in this time era men were much more superior to women as it is explained some in this play.

Sir Toby

Yes, as a "sir" Toby would have a clear sense of where he stood in, as I mentioned today, the chain of being. It wouild be above all women, even the niece he was dependent upon for food, drink and shelter.
