Rowlandson was able to see the indians in much more depth than what Knight had experienced. Rowl saw that the indians had depth in their feelings. They laughed when they saw her fall off the horse. She saw compassion when the indians let her talk to her friend during the time that she was captured. Knight didn't see that. She saw the indians as a more general thing. They were native to the americas so she saw them as a type of people. Not just savages (even though everyone called them savages at the time) but as a community that is native to where they are. It is crucial of the time in which they had said it because in such a small amount of time their views had changed greatly. Even though the lavel stayed the same.

My first example is "Another there was, who, running along, was shot and wounded, and fell down; he begged of them his life, promising them money, (as they told me;) but they would not hearken to him, but knock'd him on the head, stripped him naked, and spit open his bowels." p199. This shows the brutality that Rowl saw as oposed to the different view of things that kimble saw. "Informed myself of the manners and customs of the place" p279. The indians were nice and did not see kimble as very threatening. They helped her out on her journey. This shows the difference in area and time of how the indians react to the people that are there. This means that the indians in different areas would react differently. Some were nice and some were 'wild savages'. It all depended on where the person was and in what time line they were at.

My second example is "Then I took oaken leaves and laid to my side, and with the blessing of gott it cured me also; yet before the cure was wrought, I may say as it is in Psal. (?) xxxviii. 5,6, My wounds stink and are corrup, I am troubled, I am bowed down greatly, I go mourning all the day long." Rowl was very very very religious and it showed greatly when she was able to obtain a bible from one of the indians. From then on, she kept citing quotes from the bible that related to her situation. Kimble on the other hand didnt lay so much up to gott as what to do, she took charge of her life and relied little on hand outs from gott. She was able to traverse with the native americans and rarely, if ever, referred anything to the bible or to any religious texts.

My final example is "Hearing the noise of some guns, we looked out; several houses were burning, and the smoke ascending to heaven"p199 Notice that there arent any misspellings. Even 'ascending' is spelled correctly. The few years in between greatly changed how the people were able to write. Either that or Rowl was very much more educated than that of kimble. "They are govern'd by the same laws as wee in boston, (or little differing,) thr'out this whole colony of connecticot, and much the same way of church government, and many of them good, sociable people, and I hope relicious too: but a little too much independent in their principalls, and, as I have been told, were formerly in their zeal very riggid in their administrations towards such as their lawes made offenders..."p279 you get the idea. Just how she writes is different from that of Rowls. There are much more spelling mistakes and random commas all over the place that signify pretty much nothing. It makes Rowl's writing much easier to read and understand when compared to the earlier writings of kimble.
