QUINTESSENTIALLY AMERICAN
To begin, I had not the slightest idea what "quintessentially" meant, so I had to find a definition. Quintessence: Noun-the most perfect embodiment of something. That is how I will define what my X will be. So here it is:
QUINTESSENTIALLY AMERICAN PASSAGES
1. "I celebrate myself, and sing myself...." (P. 2441)
-Yes. I am using the first line, because I think it screams "AMERICAN!!". This single line opens the entire poem, which is quite lengthy might I point out, with a very bold statement that I think few other cultures besides our American people would dare to say, especially back then when humility and reservedness was virtue. Whenever I speak with new immigrants just off the boat, one of the first things they notice about Americans, in addition to... "why are they always smiling...", is that they seem abnormally positive and always praise everyone for every little thing. Most Americans probobly don't realize it, but its not in all countries that your mommy goes, "GOOD JOB SWEETIE!! You are the BEST!!" I might be exxagerating it a little, but overall, Americans tend to praise themselves and eachother a whole of a lot more than most other peoples of the world. What it seems like to me, is that elsewhere, you are expected to do the right thing, so when you do something good, its not really praised all that much because thats just the way it should be. I'm not saying its a bad thing that in America we are all SO incredibly uplifting, I think its a great thing, but it seems to be limited on our American soil and one of the first things outsiders notice about us. And that first line embodies that postive, self assured, praise giving attitude we Americans tend to hold.
2. ... "And I say it is as great to be a woman as to be a man, And I say there is nothing greater than the mother of men." (P. 2456 L. 425)
-This passage, obviously, uplifts women. I think womens equality movements really has a lot to do with America, and having equality is something Americans often discuss and it is hugely important in America and to Americans. In this passage, Whitman saying that being a woman is as great as being a man can accurately apply to women in America, not necessarily in all other parts of the world, which is why I think this passage is quintessentially American. I'd have to say in America, women have a lot more respect and power than they do in many other places... just look at our presidential candidates... and its great that women in America have those kinds of opportunities.
3. " I am bringing help for the sick as they pant on their backs, And for strong upright men I bring yet more needed help." (P. 2475 L. 1021 & 1022)
-America takes care of its people. All systems and all other things have flaws, thats true, but America DOES take care of its people. That is what I get out of this passage. He's talking about how he helps the sick, but he also helps the strong men. I think this shows a balance, that you can't only help the sick or only support the strong, you need to do both, and that is what happens in America. It provides so much help to people who need it and also gives great opportunities.

Americans Superior? Pffft!
Sure we are proud to be Americans, but I'm not so sure if we are the boldest. We, as Americans, would like to think that we are the best, but in all actuality we aren't. I disagree with the statement "few other cultures besides our American people would dare to say, especially back then when humility and reservedness was virtue". There is lots of other cultures that believe they are superior, we are just the biggest assholes so we get noticed more.
agree and disagree
hannah-
i would agree with you on some level, Americans do tend to be be very patriotic, even to the point where we are almost trying to shove it down other countries throats. We take a lot of pride in ourselves and our country.
however, i think that the opinion of us being the "biggest assholes" would depend on what culture you are asking. It seems like some amount of force is needed, simply because we are the world power. Im not trying to justify certain actions of our country, simply stating the fact that we have very large responsibilities as one of the world's leaders.
Biggest Assholes...
Wow. To be real honest, from the whole almost quarter I've been in the same class with you, a lot of the things you say almost sound like you just downright hate America. If its so damn awfull... why do you stay around? Where are you gonna find a place any better? Canada...?.. ha. Biggest assholes? Gee what a generalization... and yes, there ARE (not is) lots of cultures who believe they are superior... And honestly, I wasn't even talking about SUPERIORITY as a country or being "the best". I was talking about how American people in general are very confident and like to praise themselves and others around them.
somewhere in between
I think every generation, or epoch/era more rightly, has what might be considered it's biggest, well, assholes. I think it depends on how one looks at things though. I think many who are getting beaten up by our military might, or who are oppressed because we use our might to support others, would agree. America has been no friend to the Palestinian in our unwavering support of Israel. the flip side of this is that most Palestinians, and just about any other nation's people, would be just fine with individual Americans.
But more to the point, what might it tell us about our propensity to sing our own praises, as we do now or Whitman did back then? Are we stuck on ourselves? Unaware of how we really are? Insecure? Bradley
America the Proud
I liked how you used the first line as your quote. I agree with you it screams American, that one line basically sums up America in a nutshell. I touched upon this in my posting, Americans often feel they are the best country and all others should follow. This could be a reason why mist other countries dont like America. We see oursleves as the world leaders and are very self-righteous in the sense.
Smile!
I've noticed that too about new immigrants or visitors who come here and comment on how we are always smiling and positive. Though, I've also heard that a lot of them think we are just being insincere. Who knows.

Fake Nice
Ooh yes, well if you think about it, how sincere are we?? We always say things, almost out of habit it seems like, and don't really mean it sometimes. I'm sure lots of people really are sincere, but when everyone is just smiling their face off and saying all these nice things, kind of seems fake and even sometimes really dumb.
