The Glass Menagerie blog 1

At first reading this play it seemed to lack the excitement that I enjoy about drama but was rather full of sadness and regret. I thought that it was rather boring and didn't quite understand the symbolism and themes that were introduced in the first third of the play. I then dicided to do a little research and found some information which then opened my eyes to the themes and symbolism and then found the play much more enjoyable. I like how the author loosely bases all the characters in the play on himslef and his family member, by doing this he makes it seem much more personal. It seems as though Tom is unwillingly forced to care for his mother and crrippled sister by working in a warehouse and spends his spare time escaping reality by going to the movies. His mother Amamda being rooted in the past doesn't understand Tom's habits of movie watchin, while Laura is a little more like her mother she still finds escape in other things such as her glass menagerie. This play seems to go a good job at contrasting the older and younger generations of the changing world at the time it was written. It's seems as though everyone today has a form of escapism to break the monotinous tasks of the day, what's yours?
