The Glass Menagerie blog 2

Well like I had mentioned in my previous blog this play was rather boring to me until I recieved some insight to the themes and symbolism. In the second section of reading for this play Tom seems to become more and more disillusioned and has difficulty accepting reality. I particulary enjoyed the part where tom explains what went on at the movie that he attended. Tom goes on to explain how there was a magician who escaped from a coffin without ever removing any of the nails that held it together. I found this interesting because it seemed to be symbolic of what Tom wanted for his life. He wanted to escape the reality of his life without destoying the coffin that is keeping him where he was working at the warehouse and living in the apartment with his mother and sister. This shows how people have began to neglect the responsibilities of the real world with all the new technologies being introduced at the time the play was written. It seems with all these forms of escapism that are out there today that nobody really lives 100% in the real world, wouldn't you agree?
