The End of TGM

I was actually hoping that this play wouldn't end up "And they lived happily ever after," simply because I have become so used to the tone of this play that a cliché ending would have ruined it for me. My favorite part of this scene was when the glass unicorn broke. I imediatlly thought this was a symbol of Laura. A symbol of how she changed from a sheltered girl, then to a more open minded woman because of the glass wall that was built up around her, then broken by Jim. One thing that drove me crazy was (drum roll please) AMANADA! She immediately blamed Tom for everything that went wrong, but I guess I should have seen that coming. One question I would have for everyone is what they think will happen with Laura after this heartbreak. Will she be stronger, or will she sink back into her old self?

Kersti's response to Julia

I keep coming back to this, but I think Amanda may blame Tom for everything because her husband (ex hubby) isn't around to blame, so Tom takes the heat in his father's absense. I agree with you on the glass unicorn breaking. Throughout the play (and movie) you feel badly for Laura because her mother shelters her and won't let her just live! So it's as if her glass house has shattered exposing her to the real world! I would like to hope that Laura could break free of those chains, but it's likely to think she might revert back to how she was before because that's what she was exposed to for her entire life up to that point.

unicorn becomes a horse

This is a good point. When the unicorn is broken, it becomes something real rather than a fantasy. Perhaps Laura getting a little jilted by Jim, having her horn broken off so to speak, makes it so she can deal with a little defeat without getting sick at her stomach. It's this that gives the conclusion of the play at least a little hope. I don't have a lot of hope for Laura, but there is this possibility that she too has been transformed into something real, something that can make its way in the world. Bradley

Amanda can be an incredible nusance. Even to the point where she sabotaged herself. She wanted tom to get laura a husband but she pushed him away before he ever had a chance to. I didn't like how her immediate response was to blame tom.
