I'm not sure I'm feeling engaged about this play, I am a little sad with the course the play has taken. I feel more frustration than anything. Frustration that mostly revolves around Amanda. She is beyond annoying. There aren't words to describe how irritating she is. She is like this thing that won't sit still or shut up. I think Amanda tends to find fault in everyone but herself and she blames Tom for everything gone wrong or just not gone her way because her husband isn't there to take the blame. Tom has put up with so much crap, but I think he was wrong for leaving them so abruptly. If it were his job to pay the light bills, he should have done what he promised his mother he would do and just saved up for his Merchant Marine fees and talked with his family and let them know his plans. I think he did things so suddenly because he knew that he would get a lot of crap from Amanda and he didn't want to hear it yet again. If he wanted to pursue his dreams, that's all well and good, but don't leave your family out to dry. It's the 1930's and Tom was the head of the household in those days-he would have gotten paid more simply for being male. Amanda had 2 jobs and was barely scraping by. If Tom wanted to leave he should have sent money to help his mom and sister-that could have been his sacrifice..he gets to leave that house and be what he wants to be but he helps out too. I think Tom was wrong in that he left so suddenly and he literally disappeared and Laura and Amanda had no idea where he was-that part was wrong. What I did like about the end of the play was that glass ornament that broke, was a small symbol of Laura's character breaking out of the shelter that her mother put her under. Did anyone else get that too?

I agree
I also think that Tom shouldn’t have left without any notice. To them, it was out of nowhere and gave them no time for preparation, but for him, I think it was a long time coming. It seems that even though Amanda constantly nagged, he still loved her, and he defiantly loved Laura. I think his resentment toward his mother stemmed from his resentment for the warehouse, which he felt he had to stay at to support her and Laura. It was almost as if he wanted to leave the warehouse, he would no longer be able to face them. Either way, he should have definitely given them some kind of notice.
another play
It seems there could be a whole new play based on how Amanda and Laura coped with waking up one day to find Tom gone. Bradley
