X: A Quarter or Something More

After our class discussion I came to believe one general idea: "X", whatever it may be, has more than just a literal meaning, usage or even appearance. When the assignment was first given, I'm pretty sure everyone thought Mr. Bleck was crazy. I mean, what did a quarter have to do with Shakespeare? Shakespeare didn't even know what a quarter was! It was first created after he died! Then, as time progressed, we understood what the objective of the task was: to comprehend that not everything is described only skin deep. There are so many different and obscure ways an object can be portrayed as. It could be a just a quarter but also a symbol of hope and freedom, the heart of our country, even a stupid device to play a ridiculous game with. When reading Shakespeare, one must understand the inferences of a particular item or thing in Shakespeares time. There is most likely an underlying meaning and a reason as to why Shakespeare chose that object to talk about.

agreed upon

I agree that we have to keep in mind the time and circumstances that the poem was written in. However, it is a lot harder to imagine what that object, or whatever / whoever, meant to the author. Everything in art is always up for interpretation. It sounds like you have a pretty good grasp on the concept though, I find you very insightful in class! Melissa

Thank You!

I just like to hear what other people think in class and getting conversations going is a great way to do it! lol
