Venetian Merchant in New York

I think that from what i've read in the first act i would set this play in modern day new york. I interpreted this play as being a comedy that pokes fun at a lot of the era's social condition and think that you could make a great modern adaption. I would set Antonio as a stock trader and someone who doesn't really likes what he does but makes a living. His financial status depends on the luck of the stock market just like trade ships in Shakespeare's Italy. Bassanio is a college friend that wants to court this heiress and seeks the funds from Antonio. Portia is the heiress that Bassanio met at a club once or something and is set on dating. Shylock is another trader who may have some rivalry with Antonio and the character could portray any number of stereotypes held in our culture. The "crew" are just other friends either from college or fellow stock traders. Anyway most of the character types would transfer to a modern sense easily i think. The setting would match up quite nice.

Agreed.

I agree with you on how things could easily transfer over to modern day and I think it's because there are a lot of movies sort of based off these plays. However, I think you could have gone into a little more depth with Shylock's character, making him form a rival company or something along those lines. The rest seemed pretty well orchestrated.

good setting

This is a setting that could work pretty well. We keep the focus on the mercantile world but bring it into today. The context could be further developed to be the financial meltdown of the last few years.

I was thrown by this "red jacket girl." Thought we had an interloper for a minute there. Bradley

update

yeah when i wrote this i hadn't gotten to the part where you find out all of Antonio's endeavors had failed (ships sunk). i think it would be perfect to portray those ships as various modern business investments that have gone awry. After finishing the play i really like this idea of setting, I was thinking more about Portia and how i would portray her as the daughter of a very prominent trader. She has been around the business her whole life, that maybe helped her to save Antonio (at the trial,) and generally just knows what she wants.
