I believe the play was originaly intended to have an ambiance of disdain for the "other". I would have to say that this aspect would have to remain true to the original because, it creates a sense of who the characters are. I think omiting the disdain who change the entire concept of the play.


What if it was omitted?
I agree the distain does help define the characters. How do you think the concept of the play would change if the disdain was omitted? What if only one or two elements of disdain like Portia disgust of the suiters, Shylock's hate for Antonio, everyone's disdain for Shylock, etc were removed? How would it change then? I don't think it should happen, but I'm just wondering how you think it would change.
