I think act five was a good way to end on a light note. While the story was left with the good ending (for all but Shylock, who was more or less bamboozled out of his happy ending) after act four, it still had a bit of a disjointedness about it. Act five was, in my opinion, very necessary. It tied everything up and seemed to leave the audience without any question as to what happens next.
