Journal 16... Act 5

I agree with most everyone else's post about act 5, I don't think that it is essential to the play as a whole. It seems to me that it is just put in to give the characters Lorenzo and Jessica more of a part in the play. Plus it was probably to show more drama with the characters. It just didnt seem like it was that important to the play. It was more of a wrap up type thing then an entire act.

The Last Act

It did seem added to give those two characters more of a part. Also maybe to give the play five acts instead of four because four seems a little short and awkward. I think he did what alot of writers do, he flushed out a little more to elongate, even if it's of no consequence to the actual story.

I didnt think about that...

That is a good thought about the length of the play. Have only four act would seem rather awkward and short. Adding the fifth act gave a sort of wrap up and worked as a balance factor to the play.

Change My Mind

Before researching the last act of the MOV, I thought it wasn't of any consequence and could be thrown out, but it does give more character insight. It really showcases Portia's character and how manipulative she can be with Bassanio. She seemed to sense the relationship between him and Antonio and made Bassanio promise he only has eyes for her. She threatens to sleep with other men if he doen't commit solely to her. This last Act really shows character development and how strong of a character Portia is. I think if this act was gotton rid off it would leave the characters without their full developement.
