18: Video
I absolutely love watching Shakespeare's plays performed. They make so much more sense when I hear and see how the people look, what they are saying, how they are saying it, etc. It is rather uneventful reading plays when they are obviously meant to be performed. Seeing King Richard II performed completely changes my outlook on the play. Hint: I understand it much more and appreciate it much more. Michael Pennington is brilliant, and such a wonderful actor. He is so powerful in the execution of his words, and the emotion in his voice really brings the words to life. I found myself getting chills in the first few minutes when he began delivering his performance. Seeing this really gave me a different outlook on the characters. It assisted me to understand and articulate the story more accurately. Even though it is rather difficult to understand the words Shakespeare uses, being able to see people speak them with real emotion helps explain the play better. I really feel like a lot of people don't appreciate Shakespeare simply because they don't understand it. For me, seeing the plays performed has helped me with that more because in just seeing somebody's deliverance with the dialogue can help point the audience in the right direction. I'm really glad we were introduced to this.

Understanding words
I like what you say about the real emotion helping to understand words. The voice is really necessary to set up the words that are spoken. It would be interesting to know if shakespeare, like us, started by writing words and then let the actors add emotion (which would fit non-historical plays better methinks) or if he had a specific emotion that he was just using words to fill the empty space.

Watching Plays
I loved watching the video too! It made me laugh when I saw (through your writing) how excited you were to watch it as well. It really does add more demension to the play when you can see facial expression and posturing and hear the fluctuations in the tones of the actors voices. I'm an avid play viewer, by the way, so I definitely enjoy watching Shakespeare performed. :]
