Journal 21: Government Expectation
There were many fantastic ideas discussed in the mock seminar today and I think that the confusion I had regarding the journal has been cleared away and now I have a proper conclusion about government. The message that may be taken away from this play is complex in many respects. It is hard to understand what to expect from one's government if the king himself may not understand what is expected of him. There are so many different definitions as to what is right and wrong and throughout this play everyone has a definition that suits them. I think that Richard was a weak king, however, I believe he also had weak role models, so it is no surprise that his monarchy would be weak, as well. I think that this play is also sending out the message that it is okay to question your government and act in order to bring about positive change. The only problem with this is that the next ruler may not be as innovative and trustworthy as the last. In the play, one Harry seizes control of Richard's throne it is hard to say if his actions are appropriate or if the outcome of his rule will be better than Richard's. Harry does seem more prepared for the responsibility of king, however, he may find that the burden of being king and pleasing the whole country can be a tremendous effort. However, the courage of Harry to stand up against his king for what he believed was right is something that can be taken from this play as something positive, I think, if one ignores the fact that Richard had divine right to the throne. But, in the seminar someone brought up a very important aspects to government: people are flawed, so the government itself is going to be flawed, it is a creation of man and therefore cannot be perfect.

Expect.
Do you think that Richard did what was expected of him? He was the king by God given right, which that is what he believed and as well as most others even if they didn't agree or like what he was doing. Would you blame Richard or his role models for his weaknesses?

whose to blame?
I do feel that richard didn't not live up to his expectations as king and as much and I want to blame him and point the finger and say that he brought this upon himself, he had to learn from someone. It is hard to blame the child for what the parent teaches is appropriate and I think that may be the situation for Richard. He is a victim as well, with poor role models, but he still had the potential to do better. It's a tough call. Veronica Sparks
epic fail
I agree, it really is a tough call. Having to assume that Richard was so young and made King before he had hit puberty could definitely be the reasoning for future mistakes. He seems to have been sheltered yet left on his own to a degree to make any decision he "felt" fit. The poor man was probably clueless yet I don't know if I take full pity upon him. He did mess up...epically.
