Journal 26

One thing that I noticed was the Hamlet is one of the biggest whiners I have ever come across. I noticed this a little in the first act, but in act 2.2.526, Hamlet laments for almost the whole page. It is filled with lines such as, "O, what a rouge and peasant slave am I". I guess he has a reason to be distraught, but I think he is going a little overboard. He sort of reminds me of someone from an old Greek play, which I think was called Electra. In the play, her only role in the story is to lament over everything that happens. I am guessing that Shakespeare must have been influenced by that a little, because she and Hamlet act very similar.

HaHa!

It's great to get someone else who is really forward like me. I totally agree with you that Hamlet's pity parties get more extreme in that second act, though I agree with Michael that it may be part of his own little plan. I also like how you connected the act to another play. Good job. :]

*Tina

its true

I dont think anyone will argue the fact that Hamlet is a whiner, its very obvious throughout the play so far. Though i would argue that he has cause and that its a little confusing but not really boring as he constantly plays with madness. Mocking such characters as Polonius with his said "madness", though we know not if he really is, Hamlet i think is pretty amusing in sort of a dark comedic way.

Yep

He is defiantly an amusing character, especially in one of the productions we saw in class (the one with out mel gibson). Some of his comments come out of nowhere, and how they are said can make it funnier. Like when he was saying that the book had "words". He made his voice/face completely ridiculous. I think that is why I like seeing the play better than reading it.

Sorry

My computer freaked out, and it posted the same thing a couple of times...
