journal 27: doom
Act III is the determining act foreshadowing the rest of the play filled with death and discontent. Hamlet denounces Ophelia and all the rest of human kind to be some kind of monsters, leading the reader to wonder if he is serious or still playing at madness. I expect something disastrous to come of this if Hamlet is in fact serious, though if he is merely playing with Ophelia I should expect his plan to work out whatever it may be. We also find in act III that Claudius and hamlet’s mother did actually kill Hamlet’s father, as Hamlet hears Claudius’s confession. Hamlet doesn’t kill Claudius in this scene however, which I should think will cost him later, another fault due to his theme of damning uncertainty. The last scene where Hamlet kills Polonius is a declaration of his rage and overwhelming anger that also could lead to his downfall. But he does not lower himself to point of killing his mother, so there may be some hope for him though it doesn’t seem likely. Hamlets drastic actions and his failure to follow through with some of his plans would lead to me to believe it will end badly for him.
