Themes-The coquette was written with themes that were very useful to women at the time it was written.
It viewed as a teaching tool for women.
Next to the bible, it was one of the most read books at the time.
Pure and Un pure women-
In the book, we see an example of an un pure woman, which Eliza Represents.
At the time, women were expected to be “pure” before marriage…
Any women who were unclean were seen as undesirable for marriage.
They were expected to be very submissive to their husbands.
Again, Eliza does not represent this quality.
Oppression of Women
At the time, women were not given educations, and were not allowed to try to better themselves.
They were expected to take care of the house and the children.
They were to only care for their husband, children and house period.
Employment was out of the question, as was education.
marriage-
Marriage was a theme that went on throughout the book.
Every woman's goal was to settle down ad get married.
Every woman except Eliza.
She did not like the idea of marriage because it would “tie her down”, somehow limiting her fun.
She blatantly broke the trend of society because she simply did not want to go along with the rest of them.
Eliza vs. Society-
Eliza broke almost every rule that were placed on women by society.
She dated 2 men at one time.
Was married more than one time.
Defiantly a “un pure” woman.
Did not agree with the idea of marriage.
Hated the idea of people telling her what to do.
Basically a real good example of how not to act.
