Conflicts of the Coquette

Eliza vs. Society

Society expects women to be submissive, cook, clean, and take care of their husbands.

Eliza's ideas conflict with what society wants her to do.

She wants to decide what she wants to do.

Does not like anyone to tell her what to do, and hates being submissive.

She does not want to be tied down to one man like society would prefer women to be.

Eliza vs. sanford

She is attracted to him, but does not want to get too involved because he is a “bad boy”, and rejected by society.

Everyone around her is constantly trying to encourage the end of their relationship, but they are constantly together.

She wants to break off the relationship, but just cannot seem to do it.

Society and Sanford are pulling in opposite directions.

Eliza vs. Boyer

Boyer is looked upon positively by society, but Eliza finds him a bit boring.

Boyer and Eliza seemed to be going in different directions.

Boyer wants to get married and settle down, while Eliza just wants to have fun and see different men.

Boyer does not like that Eliza is seeing two different men, while Eliza really enjoys it.

Boyer vs.Sanford

The two men that are gunning for Eliza do not like each other, because they are both going for Eliza's favor.

Sanford looks at Boyer as a minor speed bump in her relationship with Eliza, because he sees Boyer as a inferior man.

Boyer looks at Sanford very negatively, thinking he is a deceiver and having wrong intentions with Eliza.

Society vs. Sanford

Sanford is looked at by society as too much of a bad boy.

Society does not approve of Eliza/Sanford’s relationship.

Sanford is known to be a womanizer, so they know Eliza is just another of his victims.

Society is the only one that see’s his true intentions, while Eliza seems to be blind to them.
